SSD Prices Just Went Insane — Here's What's Actually Going On

I own three Samsung T7 SSDs — two 2TB and a 4TB as well as a dozen spin disk drives. I bought them when they were reasonably priced, and honestly, I didn't think much about it at the time. You needed storage, you bought storage, life went on.

Then I went to price out a new one recently and about spit out my coffee. Drives that used to run a couple hundred bucks are now pushing well over a thousand for the same capacity. If you've felt that same gut punch lately, you're not imagining it — and you're not alone.

Let me break down what's actually happening, in plain English, no tech-jargon required.


Wait, why did this happen so fast?

Short answer: AI ate our storage.

Longer answer — every AI company on earth is building massive data centers to train and run their models, and those data centers need an insane amount of storage. A single high-end AI server rack can require over 1,150 terabytes of storage capacity. One rack. That's more storage than most of us will use in our entire lives, times a few thousand.

So the companies that make the memory chips inside every SSD — Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron — are pulling their factory capacity away from consumer drives (yours and mine) and pointing it straight at AI companies who are paying way, way more for it.

And here's the kicker — Samsung's profits jumped 755% in the first quarter of 2026 alone, pulling in around 38 billion dollars, with 95% of that coming from memory. When a shortage means that kind of payday, there's zero incentive to fix it fast.



The actual prices — so you know you're not crazy

I use the Samsung T7 line myself, so let's use it as the example.

Samsung's own website currently lists the 2TB T7 Shield at $574.99. A year or so ago, that same drive was sitting comfortably under $200.

I even found a recent deal where the 2TB T7 dropped from its normal $550 price down to $384 during a sale — and that 'sale price' is still nearly double what it used to cost outright.

Across the board it's the same story. Consumer SSD prices have doubled in some cases since late 2025, with basic 1TB drives jumping from around $45 to nearly $90.

If you're shopping around right now — check Amazon, Best Buy, B&H, and Walmart before you buy anything. Prices are shifting week to week, sometimes even faster, so whatever number you see today might not be the number tomorrow.


Is this going to get better anytime soon?

I wish I had better news for you here. It's not.

According to Phison's CEO, all NAND production capacity has already been sold out for all of 2026. Read that again — the entire year's supply is spoken for already.

Industry analysts don't expect meaningful relief until late 2026 at the earliest, and prices returning to 2024 levels isn't likely for at least another 12 to 18 months.

And building new factories to fix this? That's not expected to meaningfully help until 2027 or 2028. This isn't a 'wait a few months and it'll pass' situation. This is a multi-year shift in how the whole industry works.



What this means for us — photographers and video producers

If you're shooting weddings, events, headshots, are in video production or anything else that eats up storage fast, this hits close to home. Here's my honest advice:

Buy now if you need it. Waiting for prices to drop isn't a real strategy right now — they're more likely to keep climbing.

Don't panic-buy the biggest drive you can find. Get what you actually need for your current workflow.

Back up smart, not big. If prices keep climbing, redundant backups get expensive fast. Make sure your backup strategy is efficient, not wasteful.

Budget it into your business. If you're quoting jobs or planning equipment purchases, build in some cushion for storage costs over the next year or two. This isn't going away quietly.


One final thought

One quick tip on storage: Use the SSDs to edit video and photos. Once the drive is about 70% full, transfer all the older projects to a cheap spin disk drive like a Lacie or a WD. This way you can still transfer and edit on the faster drive and store all the old content on cheap drives.

It's a strange loop when you think about it — the same AI technology helping so many of us edit faster, generate content, and run our businesses smarter is also the reason the physical tools we depend on just got a lot more expensive. Kind of ironic for a guy who uses both AI tools and SSDs every single week.

Keep an eye on your storage. Buy smart. And don't be shocked if prices keep climbing before they ever come back down.
