If you've ever scrolled past a portrait with that dreamy, melted-butter background and wondered "how did they get that?" — you're not alone. It's one of the most requested looks from beginner photographers, and one of the most misunderstood.
Here's the good news: bokeh isn't magic, and it isn't luck. It's physics, and once you understand the three variables that control it, you can create that blurry background look on purpose, every single time — not just when you happen to get lucky.
Let's break it down properly.
What is bokeh, actually?
Bokeh (pronounced "BOH-kay," from the Japanese word for "blur") refers to the aesthetic quality of the out-of-focus areas in a photograph — specifically the background and foreground blur behind and in front of your subject.
Here's the key thing to understand: a camera lens can only truly focus on one specific distance at a time. Everything at that exact distance from your lens is sharp. Everything closer or farther away falls outside that "in-focus zone" and renders as blur. The size of that in-focus zone is called your depth of field — a shallow depth of field means a thin sliver is sharp and everything else blurs; a deep depth of field means a large range stays sharp.
Bokeh is what happens when you deliberately create a shallow depth of field, so your subject is crisp and everything behind them dissolves into soft blur.
The three variables that control your blur
1. Aperture — the size of your lens opening
Your aperture is measured in f-stops (f/1.4, f/2.8, f/5.6, f/11, and so on), and here's the part that confuses every beginner: the lower the number, the wider the opening, and the more blur you get.
Think of your aperture like a doorway. A wide-open doorway (a low f-number like f/2.8) lets in a narrow, concentrated beam of light and creates a very shallow depth of field. A narrow doorway (a high f-number like f/11) lets in light from a wider angle and keeps more of the scene in focus.
At f/5.6, your background will show some softness but still be somewhat recognizable. Drop to f/4, and it blurs further. Drop to f/2.8 or lower, and the background can dissolve into pure color and light — that's your classic bokeh look.
Practical tip: If your lens allows it, try shooting at your widest available aperture (the lowest f-number your lens supports) for maximum background blur.

2. Focal length — how zoomed in you are
This is the variable most beginners overlook entirely. Even at the exact same aperture, a longer focal length (more zoomed in) compresses the background and increases blur compared to a wider focal length.
Here's why: as you zoom in, your angle of view narrows, which magnifies the background relative to your subject and makes the transition between sharp and blurry more pronounced. At 70mm, you'll get noticeable blur at a wide aperture. Zoom to 105mm, and it increases. Push to 200mm, and the blur becomes dramatically more pronounced — even at the identical f-stop.
Practical tip: If you own a zoom lens, don't just adjust your aperture for blur — zoom in as well. Combining a wide aperture with a longer focal length is one of the fastest ways to maximize bokeh.
3. Distance — both yours and your background's
The third variable is spatial, not something you adjust on your camera at all — it's where you physically position things.
Two distances matter here: Subject-to-camera distance — the closer your subject is to your camera, the shallower your depth of field becomes, and the blurrier the background gets. Subject-to-background distance — the farther your subject is from whatever's behind them, the more that background falls outside the in-focus zone and blurs.
This is why a portrait shot with your subject standing right against a wall almost never looks as blurry as the same portrait with your subject standing 15 feet in front of that same wall. Same lens, same settings — completely different result, just from repositioning.
Practical tip: Before you touch a single camera setting, look at your scene. Can you move your subject farther from the background? Can you get physically closer to your subject? These positioning choices often matter more than any setting on your camera.
Putting it all together
The real magic happens when you stack all three variables intentionally: a low f-number (wide aperture), a longer focal length (zoomed in), and your subject close to camera, far from background.
Combine all three, and you get maximum bokeh — the kind of creamy, dreamy background separation that makes a portrait look genuinely professional.
Miss on all three — narrow aperture, wide focal length, subject standing against a flat wall — and you'll get a flat, everything-in-focus image, even with an expensive camera.
Common mistakes beginners make
Relying on aperture alone. Shooting wide open at f/1.8 but standing your subject two feet from a brick wall will still give you a fairly sharp, unflattering background. Aperture is only one-third of the equation.
Zooming out instead of in. Many beginners think wider shots feel more "professional" and shoot at 24mm or 35mm, then wonder why there's no blur. Longer focal lengths are your friend for portrait-style bokeh.
Ignoring the background entirely. Busy, cluttered, or close backgrounds fight against blur no matter your settings. Scout your location and background before you even lift the camera.
Sacrificing focus accuracy for blur. The shallower your depth of field, the smaller your margin for error on focus. At f/1.4 or f/2, missing focus by even an inch can mean your subject's eyes aren't sharp — always double-check focus, especially at wide apertures.
